Geologic maps of southern and central California are free to download
The Geologic Maps Foundation (GMF) has uploaded .pdf files of 257 geologic maps (mostly 7.5' quads, 1:24,000 scale and 15' quads, 1:62,500 scale) to its webpage
Geologists, hikers, and anyone else interested in California’s natural sciences.
Curious about the geology in southern and central California? GMF has uploaded .pdf files of 257 geologic maps (mostly 7.5' quads, 1:24,000 scale and 15' quads, 1:62,500 scale)* of southern and central California to the Geologic Maps Foundation, Inc.'s web page. Maps are high-resolution .pdf files and free to download. Eventually we hope to have the maps run on a smartphone with the ability to locate and track on the maps. For now, this link will take you to the map library https://geologicmapsfoundation.org/geologic-maps/
In addition, there is a mid-year 2025 fund raiser to benefit the Geologic Maps Foundation, Inc. (GMF). Donation link: https://gofund.me/800a6fdc
A donation will help make an impact to our geological mapping and educational efforts. GMF is an IRS designated 501 3c nonprofit and registered with the California State AG's office, https://oag.ca.gov/charities
GMF has no employees (it's an all-volunteer effort). We occasionally hire GIS (Geographical Information Systems) experts and other map making consultants on a temporary basis to help us with our map efforts.
*The original field mapping was done by Thomas W. Dibblee Jr. from the late 1930s to early 2000. Thomas L. Davis Geologist and staff digitized the original mapping in various GIS software over the last decade, and recently donated the .pdf copies to the Foundation.
As you may know our educational efforts include Geo-hikes, for instance:
Thanks, Thom Davis
